Young People In Egypt Protesting for Democracy

I feel so lucky to have been born in the United States where I can say what I believe in and am not punished for doing it. I might be a Conservative Kid and do not like some of the things going on in the United States but am happy I do not live under a Dictator in Egypt or anywhere else. When I watch this video I see so many young people protesting that also want to be free to express their views and experience the freedoms we have in our country. I don’t understand everything that is going on there and maybe you would like to make comments to help me understand.

  1. Well, One theory is that these riots in the Middle East are not about freedom and democracy, they are about expensive food, which makes life very difficult. Many people in places like Egypt spend most of their money on food to feed their families. When food gets expensive they have no money left over for anything else, or even worse, they go to bed hungry.

Some people think that the reason their food has gotten so expensive is because a guy named Ben Bernake keeps printing up money and tossing it out of the back of a truck. Since nobody really earned that money, all that happens is that stuff gets more expensive. In Egypt it is wheat that has gone way up in price – and the Egyptians use wheat to make yummy cous cous – which goes with everything and is easy to cook. Now they have to pay more for their cous cous and have nothing left over to buy new shoes. It would make me mad, too. Bad Ben Bernake.
