If you have been paying attention to the media recently you have probably heard about the United States accepting Syrian refugees. You have also heard that some of the states In the U.S. are declining to take Syrian refugees. The Obama administration has stated that the United States is making room for 10,000 refugees in the coming year, but at this time has only accepted around 2,000 refugees. This may seem like a very small amount compared to how many refugees there are fleeing from war. But why so few as compared to some other countries or even how many refugees the U.S. has accepted in the recent years from other countries? The Pew Research Center shows a breakdown of refugees into the United States since 1975. PewResearchCenter
United States Accepting Syrian Refugees is it Right or Wrong?
So is the U.S wrong to accepting so few refugees? Some people are saying don’t accept them because of security issues, but let’s also think about some of the other potential problems.
-Medical checks making sure they have their proper shots and vaccinations. Let’s make sure they don’t have diseases that have been eliminated from the U.S over the years.
-Schooling, can our schools deal with these additional language concerns?
-The refugees are coming to a country they have never been to before and will be lost because of how differently this country works, it’s language and culture, how our government works, freedoms, federal, state and local laws that are often based on location, etc. etc. etc.
Now let’s look at the other side of the topic why should we accept them into the U.S? Yes we should help with the refugee problem and we currently are, but we should be looking at what we can do over there. Why? “Refugees” are persons seeking asylum in other countries. Many of these refugees eventually want to and need to go back home.
I believe that instead of accepting a bunch of refugees we should increase our help to resolve the conflict in the middle east without just putting boots on the ground. With international help, security help of NATO forces, help with supplies and maybe security if needed. We do need to help keep the peace, and help to build refugee camps where the refugees and live until ready to go back home.
